The tale begins in London. Penny Ramsey has come to town to provide assistance to her sister, Kate, who not only has eight orphans to care for, but she is now pregnant as well! Kate's husband, Dr. Jon Foster, is very busy providing his services at a London hospital, so Kate needs an extra set of hands at home. Shortly after her arrival, Penny meets Alex Goodwin, a childhood friend of Jon's. Alex is currently training to become a pilot in the Royal Naval Air Service.
